Information regarding SEND

How do we identify special educational learning needs?

At Chetwynd we monitor the progress of all children. Parents are encouraged to approach the teachers if they believe their child has difficulties; Ms Marston is available to offer advice and give guidance as soon as there are concerns.

How will I know if my child is receiving SEN support?

The SENDCO supports class teachers through a process of enquiry which may include observations, assessments and discussions with the child, parents and/or carers to plan for appropriate support and to enable the child to achieve good outcomes. School will also draw on the support and advice from an external specialist service if required.

Parents are informed when special educational provision for their child is made. The class teacher and SENDCO will discuss plans and review progress with you.

Where can I find information about the school SEN policy?

Our SEND Policy will give you the information you need about how we make provision for all pupils with SEND. This is available on the School web site, please click here to view.

If you would like to discuss our SEND provision or find out more, please make an appointment to meet with Ms Marston our SENCO.

How do we make sure that the SEN support is helping pupils make better progress?

The progress of all children across the school is tracked. Class teachers, supported by the senior leadership team, assess and review these results in regard to specific children, to ensure that any specific provision is effective in helping children make progress.

Additional assessments from external services may be sought and can include; Specialist Teacher Service (STS), Integrated Disability Service (IDS), the Psychology service including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) and Occupational Therapy (OT).

Generalised information regarding progression is shared on a termly basis with Governors.

How will I know that my child is making progress?

Information from assessments is discussed with all adults involved and appropriate next steps planned. This will be with the class teacher in the first instance, supported by the SENCO. This offers an opportunity for parents to raise concerns and, together with the teacher, agree their aspirations for the child.

How do you check and review the progress made by pupils with SEN?

Termly reviews between the Headteacher / Assistant Headteachers / Class Teacher and SENCO assess the progress and provision for pupils. All assessments are reported to parents following the termly meetings and parental views and child views are invited. Those meetings that involve outside agencies may also include a specialist advisor.

An annual report, in common with all children, is also produced.

How do your teachers help pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities to learn?

The teacher will have the highest possible expectations for your child and all pupils in his or her class. All teaching is based on building on what your child already knows, can do and can understand. Your child’s teacher, with support from the SENCO and Senior Leaders will put in place different ways of teaching so that your child is fully involved in learning in the class.

This may involve things like using more practical learning or providing different resources adapted for your child. Your child's teacher will also put in place specific strategies (which may be suggested by the SENCO or staff from outside agencies) to enable your child to access the learning task. All children in school receive this. Your child's teacher will have carefully checked on his or her progress to monitor any gaps in his or her understanding/learning and determine whether your child needs some extra support in order to close the gap between your child and their peers.

He/ She will plan the most appropriate intervention for your child to ensure that your child begins to make better progress.

How can I find out more about what my child is learning at the moment?

Information about intervention for your child is available from the class teacher and is included in their Individual Education Plan.

Further information about what your child is learning is available on the school website here and your child's class teacher will be able to give you more information about what the class is learning at the moment and how he/she is helping your child to access the curriculum and make good progress.

How have you made the school buildings and site safe and welcoming for pupils with SEN or disabilities?

There is a disabled toilet and dedicated Medical Room to address particular needs.

Adaptations are used in all classrooms to suit the individual needs of children. These can include, seating arrangements within the class, enlarged print, desk slopes, coloured overlays, wobble cushions and specific pencil grips.

There are a number of spaces for quiet withdrawal and study around the school. Rooms are carpeted to assist with hearing impairment.

Further information can be found in our school Accessibility Plan.

What kinds of support will be available for my child?

Pupils are asked to share their view and perceptions about their needs prior to the target setting process, they are involved in their review meetings and at the end of KS2 make active contributions towards them. Regular Numeracy / Literacy Targets are set, in common with all children, by the class teacher. Pupils fill in their own self-assessment evaluation forms each term with regard to Health Care Plans. Personal Education Plans (LAC).
