"There are incredible psychological benefits of learning another language. Pupils outscore their non-foreign language learning peers in verbal and maths tests, indicating that learning an additional language is a cognitive activity not just a linguistic one.
Children who grow up learning about languages develop empathy for others and a curiosity for different cultures and ideas. Furthermore, in later years, career opportunities increase for those with additional languages to offer"
Here at Chetywnd we believe that the earlier a child is exposed to a foreign language, the faster the language is acquired.
All children have weekly French/Spanish lessons, taught by an MFL specialist.
French is taught in years 3 and 4 where topics such as greetings, numbers, colours, dates, food and drink are covered in a fun and engaging way.
Pupils then progress to learning Spanish in years 5 and 6, where along with essential vocabulary and phrases, they will become familiar with basic grammatical structures.
By the time children leave Chetwynd, they will have had 4 years exposure to 2 foreign languages and be very well prepared for language-learning at Key Stage 3.
